Rostourism on salmonella outbreak in Belgium

According to a report from Rospotrebnadzor, citing the Belgian Federal Agency for Food Safety (Afsca) on May 24, salmonellosis has been diagnosed in children aged 4 to 11 in several schools and kindergartens in Flanders (northern Belgium). The number of hospitalized children exceeded 60 people, 37 of whom had a laboratory-confirmed diagnosis of salmonellosis.

The cause of the infection, according to the preliminary conclusion of the Belgian Health and Surveillance Agency (HCA), is contaminated food products supplied to the canteens of children's and educational institutions in Flanders. The authorities consider the outbreak to be significant and believe that the number of infected children may increase, since the source of infection and the vector of spread have not yet been established.

The work of the enterprise producing and supplying ready-to-eat food products for children's and educational institutions has been suspended. Sanitary treatment of the production lines of this enterprise is being carried out.

The Federal Tourism Agency calls on tour operators selling tours to Belgium to warn their clients about the unfavorable epidemiological situation in the country. Rostourism recommends that tourists take this information into account when planning trips to Belgium.
