In Istanbul, aluminum cans and plastic bottles have begun to be accepted as payment for metro travel and public toilets, BFM TV reports.
Unusual machines have been installed at the İTÜ-Ayazağa metro station in Maslak, Istanbul's second-largest financial district. for receiving containers. These devices allow you to top up your Istanbul Card. The amount depends on the amount of waste you put in. The machines accept plastic bottles and aluminum cans, then crush, shred, and sort them for recycling.
For one 0.5-liter plastic bottle, the machine adds 0.03 Turkish lira to the travel card. For a 0.33-liter aluminum can, the fee is 0.09 lira. To fully pay for one metro ride, you need to put about 32 1.5-liter plastic bottles or 28 aluminum cans into the machine.
The initiative aims to encourage passengers to dispose of waste on their own. Transport cards loaded in this new way can be used not only for the metro, but also for buses, trams and public toilets. By the end of the year, similar machines will be installed in 25 more places in Istanbul, including schools and universities.
Some of the most active Europeans in terms of waste recycling are residents of Finland. Here, machines for accepting plastic, glass and aluminum containers are located everywhere. Unlike Turkey, Finns are entitled to a direct monetary reward for the waste they hand in. For example, a liter bottle will bring 0.40 euros, a tin can 0.15 euros, and a glass container 0.10 euros. All money earned with the help of waste is issued in the form of a check. It can be exchanged for euros or used to pay for purchases in the store. It is worth keeping in mind that the machines only accept containers purchased in Finland.
