The Tunisian island of Djerba is one of the few places in the world where you can see pink flamingos.
You need to approach flamingos very slowly, calmly and as unnoticeably as possible. Flamingos are timid birds, so if you start approaching them, they will slowly move away at first.
The best time to see flamingos in the backwaters of Djerba is in October and November.
We saw flamingos in several places. The largest flocks were in the northern part of the island – in the lagoon formed by a long, curving peninsula. However, it was quite difficult to approach them, because the entire area from the shore to the road is a swamp overgrown with tough grass, crossed by canals.
We tried to approach the flocks from two different directions: from the highway leading to the city of Houmt Souk, and from the sandy beaches on the sea side at the end of the peninsula. In the end, we still had to walk through the swamp.
Another place where we found a flock was in a lagoon in the east of the island.
There are several shallows in the center of the water area, and the birds felt safe there. We walked straight through the water, the depth was 40-60 centimeters, so we managed to get quite close.
The best time of day for flamingo photography is evening, when the birds' plumage is beautifully shaded by the sunset.
Travel agencies offer a boat tour to the Island of Pink Flamingos and claim that you are guaranteed to see birds there. Don't believe them: this is just one of the places where the birds fly, but there are no guarantees that they will be there when you arrive (especially if you are taken there in the "off-season").
