Access to Mont Blanc is limited

Climbing Mont Blanc in France has been restricted for eight days due to a large influx of tourists. Authorities have reduced the capacity of the so-called “royal route” up the mountain because there are too many people wanting to climb it and not everyone is following safety measures.

According to the Daily Mail, 14 people died and two more went missing while attempting to conquer Europe's highest peak last year. Three have died since the start of 2018.

Often tourists begin their ascent of Mont Blanc without special equipment and gear, putting their lives at risk. In an attempt to combat the wave of unprepared tourists, the authorities have introduced fines for climbing the mountain without ropes and crampons.
