Moscow's Domodedovo Airport named after M. V. Lomonosov (DME) summed up the results of 2019. In December, the air harbor crossed a new milestone in its history - 700,000,000 passengers chose Domodedovo for travel throughout the airport's history (since 1962).
In 2019 Moscow's Domodedovo Airport has been officially named after the great scientist M. V. Lomonosov. In honor of this, the airport hosted a celebration, and the terminal's façade was decorated with a portrait of the famous natural scientist.
Development of the route network
In 2019, DME welcomed a new partner, Air Astana. A codeshare agreement was concluded between the carrier and DME's base airline, S7 Airlines. Air Astana connects Moscow with Kazakhstan's largest cities: Almaty and Nur-Sultan.
The route network of Domodedovo Airport has been expanded with other new destinations. For example, Ural Airlines has started flights to Bordeaux, Montpellier and Girona. S7 — to Nice and Semipalatinsk. IrAero and Smartavia airlines have opened flights to Orenburg. Royal Flight has resumed its flight program to popular tourist destinations: Goa, Nha Trang, Utapao, Colombo, Antalya.
Following a comprehensive assessment of the airports of the Moscow air hub, the Lufthansa Group airlines — Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa and SWISS — decided to continue cooperation with Domodedovo Airport for the next five years, until 2025. Chairman of the Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG Carsten Spohr and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Moscow Domodedovo Airport Dmitry Kamenshchik held a bilateral meeting and discussed the further development of the partnership.
Infrastructure projects
In 2019, DME Group completed a number of major infrastructure projects, improved technological processes and services for passengers, and prepared the basis for further business development.
A car overpass with a passenger boarding and disembarking area has opened in front of the airport. It is located within walking distance from the terminal. The capacity is 28 thousand cars per day. The overpass will be part of a two-level interchange, which will allow separating the flow of cars into departures and arrivals.
From the overpass, motorists can access a multi-level parking lot, which is connected to the terminal by a pedestrian gallery. Parking users can enter the airport without going outside.
New terminal areas continue to open within the UNDER ONE ROOF concept: the western atrium has been put into operation in the domestic air traffic zone. The atrium is 22 m high and is a mirror image of the eastern atrium in the international arrivals zone. Thanks to its opening, the total area of the terminal has increased by 6.8 thousand m2. The continuous glazing of the façade emphasizes the advantages of natural light and thus increases the energy efficiency of the terminal.
New services for passengers
A new hall has been opened for passengers with limited mobility, designed to accommodate 50 people at a time.
The mother and child room now has cribs and baby monitors for babies. A free service for providing baby strollers has been launched.
The first tourist center of the Moscow region has opened, where presentations of Moscow region cities are regularly held for airport guests.
The 24-hour beauty salon "Aerobeauty" has opened on the second floor of the common area of the DME terminal.
The airport's business lounges have begun serving holders of the Chinese DragonPass loyalty program.
New technologies
Domodedovo Airport was the first in Russia to start servicing passengers using electronic boarding passes. To do this, the airport introduced automated turnstiles that recognize 2D barcodes and QR codes on both paper and electronic media. Using electronic passes allows saving resources on printing and speeding up the passenger's pre-flight procedures.
DME has implemented a new information system, Slot Coordination, designed to automate the process of coordinating slots requested by airlines. The system automatically consolidates incoming slot requests via different channels and determines the possibility of providing the requested time, taking into account the capacity of the airfield and passenger areas of the airport. If necessary, the system selects alternative departure times. Domodedovo remains the only airport in Moscow with the second level of slot coordination according to the classification of the International Air Transport Association (IATA): the airfield infrastructure allows DME to be flexible in coordinating slots, offering the airline the most convenient time in terms of distributing all airport resources required by the carrier.
The airport's entrance areas were equipped with new-generation dual-generator introscopes, which allow for the scanning of cargo up to 1 m in width and height in a few seconds. The introscope conveyor belts are located at a height of 35 cm from the floor, which simplifies the loading of heavy and oversized items.
Domodedovo has equipped the airport checkpoints with laser breathalyzers. Employees working in the airport's controlled area (ACA) undergo mandatory contactless remote express testing for alcohol intoxication. An electronic medical examination system (EMS) has been introduced for employees of the airfield service working with vehicles in the ACA. The EMS device checks cardiac parameters, body temperature, and tests for possible drug intoxication. The system has made it possible to speed up the medical examination process, now it takes only 1.5 minutes.
Educational projects and achievements
DME traditionally pays special attention to employee development. In 2019, the airport was recognized as a leader in in-house training in the rating of the best employers in Russia according to Forbes.
A unique educational project — the DME Live Practice simulator — was recognized as the best project in the “Growth Point” nomination according to the international award in the field of internal corporate communications InterComm 2019.
For the first time, the air harbor joined the educational project for Moscow schoolchildren "Technonavigator", as well as the social projects "Day without turnstiles" and "Children about the important".
Moscow Aerotropolis
At the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2019), two agreements were signed between Domodedovo Airport, the Moscow Region Government and investors on the development of projects within the Moscow Aerotropolis.
One of the projects is the construction of a multifunctional year-round resort, "Tropical Island". Near Domodedovo Airport, infrastructure for various leisure activities will be created, including a water park, tropical forest, beaches, a cinema, a planetarium, a fitness center, a skating rink, and much more.
Another project is the construction of a 148-room Holiday Inn hotel 8 km from the airport. The hotel will be part of a 20-hectare multifunctional complex, which will also include a shopping center, parking lots, and roadside service facilities.
