Research: How Demand for Turkey Has Changed

Irina Ryabovol, representative of the international tourist metasearch site momondo.ru, on whether Egypt will be able to “catch up” with Turkey and when to expect this.

This year, demand for summer trips to Turkey has grown by 26.7% compared to 2017. Last year, however, growth queries in this direction amounted to 89.3%. In general, the more moderate dynamics of interest in Turkey is not a one-time phenomenon, but a trend characteristic of 2018. Thus, about the same number of our compatriots are going to celebrate the upcoming winter holidays in this country as last year, the growth amounted to only 3%. And last year, the same figure was 68%. At present, we can talk, if not about a change in the priorities of Russians, then certainly about the stabilization of interest in this direction.

At the moment, we have recorded a price increase for flights to Turkey of only 5% — for the upcoming beach season, spring 2019. As for hotels, they are becoming more expensive mainly at resorts: the cost of five-star accommodation in Antalya has increased by 19%, and in Bodrum — by 10.4%. In Istanbul, meanwhile, prices have increased by 4.5%. If fears about further price increases are justified, then some fans of Turkey will probably switch to other resorts. However, it is not necessary that it will be Egypt.

The situation with this country is ambiguous. Thus, in the summer of 2018, we recorded a slight decrease in interest in the destination (-13%). However, if we consider a broader period - from January to October 2018 - it turns out that demand for trips to the most popular country in Africa increased by 97% at once. However, even taking into account the two-fold growth, this country cannot yet compete with Turkey. According to the results of the 2018 holiday season, Russians request flights to Turkey 13 times more often than to Egypt.
