Three Russian cities have become leaders in the event potential of Russian regions

According to the results of the study by the National Convention Bureau, Kazan, St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg entered the TOP-3 leaders of the “Rating of Event Potential of Regions - 2019”.

At the end of 2019, the Exhibition Research Center R&C once again summed up the results of the study of the Russian event market. The study was based on the study of five groups of indicators that have the most significant impact on the development of regional business and event tourism markets: the presence of specialized infrastructure and material and technical base of the event industry, the presence of an approved policy for the development of the congress and exhibition potential of the region, the presence of a program for promoting the region on the domestic and foreign markets, the region's experience in attracting and holding significant high-level events, tourist attractiveness and transport accessibility of the destination.

"Russia is a promising country in terms of developing congress activities and is capable of seriously competing with other countries in this area. It is obvious that in such a huge country, not all regions are in equal conditions for attracting and holding major international events," he emphasized. Director of the National convention bureau Alexey Kalachev.

He also noted that destinations with infrastructure and experience in hosting large events, which have so-called event legacy, are in the best position to attract international congresses.

The study showed that, for a number of criteria, such as the number of events attracted, the development of tourism infrastructure, the level of transport accessibility, the quantitative indicators of most regions in 2019 improved compared to 2018, and the composition of the indicators became more diverse.

Unlike the previous year, the top three in the rankings have partially changed. Saint Petersburg and Yekaterinburg traditionally occupy 1st and 2nd places, respectively. Kazan, which hosted the 45th WorldSkills World Championship in 2019 at the new Kazan Expo venue, opened in the fall of 2018, moved up one position.

The active work of the Convention Bureau of the Republic of Tatarstan allowed Kazan to become the third city, after Moscow and St. Petersburg, in terms of the number of international rotating events of associations in the medium term. Traditionally, Moscow (and the Moscow region) do not participate in the rating due to the high level of development of the event infrastructure and indicators in this area.

The top 10 rankings with significant improvements in their performance compared to the previous period included Samara, Rostov-on-Don and Krasnoyarsk. According to experts, the latter's breakthrough is largely due to efforts to develop the region's material and technical infrastructure and its promotion on the global event tourism market in connection with hosting the XXIX World Winter Universiade 2019.
