Barcelona activists continue their fight against the influx of tourists to the capital of Catalonia: this time, locals have begun to urge travelers not to tell their friends that they have visited the city.
As reported by ATOR, tourists are encouraged Do not post photos of Barcelona and its attractions on social networks, and do not share impressions of the city.
“To convince tourists to ‘keep quiet’ about visiting Barcelona, FAVB activists last week organized the distribution of leaflets near the Sagrada Familia with the slogan ‘Barcelona is a treasure, hide it!’,” the Association explained.
According to activists of the Federation of Associations of City Residents (FAVB), the absence of such "advertisement" will reduce the tourist flow to the capital of Catalonia. At the same time, the head of FAVB Ana Menendez emphasizes that such an action does not infringe on tourists who are already in the city.
It should be added that Barcelona residents have been actively participating in protests and pickets in recent years to draw the city administration's attention to the problem of overtourism. Several areas of Barcelona consist almost entirely of hotels and holiday apartments, making long-term rental prices too high.
For example, in August 2017, about a hundred Barcelona residents gathered on the city beach to protest against the influx of tourists in the city. The demonstrators wore yellow T-shirts and brought posters. Then the activists said that tourists drink too much and cause rowdiness, and also because of them the prices of housing in the city are artificially inflated.
That same year, graffiti reading “Tourists, go home!” appeared in popular tourist spots.
And in the summer of 2018, masked activists chained themselves to Antoni Gaudí's sculptures in Park Güell, holding placards against mass tourism in Barcelona.
