Amsterdam to reduce number of visitors to Red Light District

Amsterdam authorities continue to “cleanse” the Red Light District of idle tourists. According to new plans by the city hall, tourist flows in this area will be regulated by closing a number of streets for sanitary cleaning.

Crowds of tourists leave behind a lot of trash, and under this pretext, the authorities plan to close the streets so that public utilities can clean it up. In this way, they hope to calm the city residents who complain about the noise and dirt from tourists, the Association of Tour Operators of Russia reports.

In addition, authorities will closely monitor the number of visitors on the streets of the quarter; in the latter case, the streets will also be closed and tourists will be redirected to less busy parts of the area.

Measures to combat antisocial behaviour by tourists will also be stepped up: more patrols with mobile payment devices will appear in the Red Light District, which will be able to fine tourists on the spot for littering or urinating in the street.

The Red Light District is an incredibly popular tourist attraction in Amsterdam. This is not to the liking of both locals and girls involved in the sex industry and working in this area. Let us recall that this winter, Amsterdam adopted new rules for visiting the Red Light District, according to which tourists are not only prohibited from taking pictures, but also from looking at girls in shop windows - now tourists must turn their backs to them.
