On Sunday, May 5, at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport, an Aeroflot Sukhoi Superjet 100 plane caught fire during an emergency landing on the Moscow-Murmansk route. According to the latest information, one person died, and four others needed medical assistance.
"According to preliminary data, today, May 5, 2019, a passenger plane flying from Moscow to Murmansk made an emergency landing at the capital's Sheremetyevo Airport and caught fire. At the moment, the investigation has information about one person killed and four people seeking medical assistance. The number of victims is being clarified," the press service of the Investigative Committee of Russia reported.
They also added that a criminal case has already been opened on the basis of the incident, under Part 3 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (violation of traffic safety rules and the operation of air transport, resulting through negligence in the death of two or more persons).
According to media reports, there were 73 people on board the plane. According to an Interfax source, the plane sent out a distress signal after takeoff and began an emergency landing. The plane failed to land on the first try, and on the second attempt, it hit its landing gear, then its nose hit the runway and caught fire.
At the same time, as the press service of the airport reported to the TRN portal, the fire has been localized at the moment. The airport is operating in a limited mode. A hotline has been opened for relatives of passengers: +7 495 232 65 40.
Later, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation informed TASS that 13 people died as a result of the tragedy, 2 of whom were children.
