Switzerland, Finland and Norway have been named the best European countries for vegetarian travellers, according to environmental organisation The Eco Experts, Lonely Planet reports.
The Eco Experts conducted a study in 26 European countries to find out which ones are the most are suitable for people who have given up consuming animal products. Experts assessed the quality of food and the range of vegan restaurants, their number per hundred thousand residents, as well as the average price of a kilogram of meat and its annual consumption per person.
According to the results, the best country for vegetarians is Switzerland. The country has the highest density of vegetarian restaurants in Europe - 165.94 establishments per 100,000 people. It was in Switzerland that the world's first vegetarian restaurant Hiltl opened in 1898. The Swiss became the eighth among those who consume the least meat per year - 74.7 kg per person. In addition, the country is a pioneer in the mass consumption of cabbage, acai and lentil dishes. Meat in Switzerland is the most expensive in Europe - 28.55 euros per kilo. Almost half of the Swiss aged 15 to 34, according to statistics, have completely stopped eating meat or significantly limited its amount in their diet.
The top ten countries recommended for visiting by vegetarians also include Finland, Norway, Sweden, Great Britain, Belgium, Hungary, Estonia and Ireland. In these countries, vegetarians will have no problem choosing tasty and varied food. In general, the Scandinavian countries topped the rating, with the exception of Denmark, which took 25th place.
Of all the European countries, experts recommend that vegetarians consider Portugal last. It took 26th place. The Portuguese consume an average of 95.2 kilograms of meat per year, and the number of local restaurants without meat dishes on the menu reaches 40.61 per 100,000 people. Russia took 23rd place in this rating.
