Several areas in northern Italy have been placed on a red alert for heavy rain and gales. Venice is experiencing one of its worst floods in history, with up to 75% of streets in the city flooded yesterday. The water level reached 156 centimeters above sea level.
According to Interfax, St. Mark's Square was closed to visitors, and gondola traffic along the canals was suspended. The flood damaged St. Mark's Cathedral, where the water level was 90 centimeters. The flooding damaged marble columns, mosaic floors, and bronze door panels.
Tourists are moving around the city in high rubber boots. Videos of travelers showing life in the flooded city are being shared on social networks. Thus, waiters wearing boots continue to serve restaurant customers despite a 30-centimeter layer of water on the floors of the establishments.
Local authorities believe that the damage from the floods is “enormous.” The full cost of the damage will be calculated when the waters recede from the streets of Venice.
