Wizzair cuts online check-in deadlines

Eastern European budget airline Wizzair has reduced the online check-in period for passengers who do not purchase a seat selection. Now it opens for them only 2 days before departure instead of the previous 30, Aviablogger.com reports.

This is intended to provide more seat choice to passengers who only bought their tickets a few days before departure but still wish to pay for seat selection. Until now, they may have faced limited choice due to a significant number of seats already being occupied by those who did not buy a seat but had checked in online in advance.

The 2-day limitation only applies to the outbound flight. For the return flight, online check-in opens simultaneously with check-in for the first flight (if there are no more than 15 days between them). This will allow most passengers to check in for both flights at the same time, print both boarding passes at once, and avoid having to find a printer at their destination.

The new rules only apply to passengers who purchased tickets on or after August 16. Those who purchased tickets before August 15 (or paid for seat selection) can still check in as early as a month before departure.

Let us remind you that Wizzair passengers must bring a printed boarding pass with them. Check-in at the airport is also possible, but costs 30 euros (or 10 if you pay for it in advance on the website). For flights from Moscow, airport check-in is currently free. Wizzair should soon open a Budapest-St. Petersburg route, but for flights from the Northern capital, airport check-in will be paid.

Wizzair has so far mostly assigned seats in the middle of a three-seat block or aisle seats to passengers who have not purchased a seat selection. Couples have usually been assigned seats together, but not window seats — seats BC or DE. Groups of three passengers who have not purchased a seat selection do not receive a whole three-seat block — at least one passenger is sent to another block. Wizzair does not prevent passengers from transferring to free seats in the cabin.
