After a morning walk around Dinan, I returned to our lovely Bed & Breakfast, which is located in an old village house 10 minutes drive from the city:
Inside, everything is very homely:
I found Katya at breakfast in the huge dining room:
Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to take advantage of the spacious living room and garden with barbecue:
We continue our movement upstream along the Meuse:
More idyllic river pictures:
Highway overpass near the village of Neffe:
Another local landmark is the Bayard Rock. The broken-off piece of the mountain range reaches a height of 33 meters, so it is extremely difficult not to notice it from the banks of the Maas River.
There are several legends about how Bayard appeared. According to one version, the giant horse Bayard, jumping over a raging river, hit the rock with his hoof, separating it from the main mountain. It is worth noting that this legend is the most popular, although there is a more reliable one. During the time of Louis XIV, French troops, in order to conquer Dinant, created a passage into the city with the help of an explosion. As a result, there is indeed a road, albeit narrow, but still functioning:
Next stop is a viewpoint with the best view of Frey Castle (Château de Freÿr):
It is considered to be one of the most picturesque and interesting castles in this area of Belgium, but we limited ourselves to just an external inspection and a short walk through the garden:
A farewell look at the Maas, after which our navigator got a little lost and instead of the direct road to Luxembourg led us "through vegetable gardens" to the small town of Bastogne.
Made famous by – the Battle of Bastogne, also known as the Siege of Bastogne. Siege battles fought by the Allied army in and around the Belgian town of Bastogne against German forces during their offensive in the Ardennes in the winter of 1944–45.
A memorial was built on Mardasson Hill in 1950 listing the names of American soldiers who died in the Battle of the Bulge. HBO made an excellent series about these events, Band of Brothers, which I highly recommend if you haven't seen it.
There are some gorgeous bushes growing on the memorial grounds:
And in the restaurant on the central square, where we parked the car, they serve a brilliant dish - an assortment of several types of pasta. Convenient when you can't choose just one:)
