Study: Russian hotels are more expensive than Turkish ones

The cost of hotels in Russian resorts in the summer of 2019 turned out to be significantly higher than in foreign cities: for example, a night in a three-star hotel in Alushta will cost three times more than in Turkish Alanya (6,000 rubles versus 2,000 rubles), and the cost of a night in a category hotel Three stars in Yalta will cost 38% more than in Rimini (6,800 rubles versus 4,900 rubles). A holiday in the Spanish Lloret de Mar will cost 4,300 rubles per night in a three-star hotel, which is 20% cheaper than accommodation in a hotel of the same category in Anapa (5,300 rubles). Such conclusions are contained in a study by the online booking service Ostrovok.ru, prepared on the basis of an analysis of user bookings for the period from June 1 to August 31, 2019.

According to Ostrovok.ru, the structure of bookings for the summer months is dominated by foreign destinations: 64% versus 36%. The share of domestic destinations has decreased by 7 percentage points compared to the same period last year.

As the company's press service told TRN, the average duration of bookings for the period from June to August 2019 on domestic routes is 6.6 days, which is 16% higher than a year earlier (5.7 days in 2018). As a result of the increase in the duration of the holiday, the average cost of bookings in Russian hotels increased - it amounted to 18,500 rubles, which is 28% higher than a year earlier (in 2018 - 14,500 rubles). Among the reasons that influenced the increase in the cost of booking, analysts also name the change in the VAT rate from January 1, 2019.

The average duration of bookings for foreign destinations remained virtually unchanged at 7.5 days (7.6 days in 2018). At the same time, the average cost of bookings for summer 2019 for foreign destinations increased by 9% and reached 44,000 rubles (40,200 rubles a year earlier). Analysts point to exchange rate fluctuations as the reason for the increase in the cost of foreign hotels.

Ostrovok.ru analysts note a trend of short-term planning of summer vacations by tourists: more than half of summer bookings – 59% – are for June, almost a third (27%) – for July, and another 14% have an arrival date in August.

In general, the demand of Russian tourists is concentrated on beach and excursion destinations - the leading countries in terms of the number of hotels booked were France, Spain, Italy, the USA, Germany and Turkey. The top 20 most popular cities included several destinations that did not make it into the top twenty a year earlier: Alanya, where the number of bookings for the period from June to August increased by 35% compared to last year, Alicante (+74%), Marseille (+77%), New York (+57%). The most expensive in the top destinations were three-star hotels in New York (13,900 rubles per night), Paris and Barcelona (11,800 rubles per night). The cheapest three-star hotels were booked in Alanya (2,000 rubles), Vilnius (4,300 rubles), Prague (4,700 rubles).
