Experts advise tourists to leave crowded Barcelona and go to the Spanish city of Girona or the Portuguese port town of Tavira, The Telegraph writes.
Sightseeing in Barcelona is becoming more and more intense every year. The reason is that that the Catalan capital has become a victim of its own popularity. The experts of the British publication named 7 excellent alternatives to the city overcrowded with tourists. However, not all of them are located in Spain.
One alternative is the lesser-known Catalan city of Girona, located 96 kilometers north of Barcelona. This ancient settlement with a thousand-year-old cultural heritage will delight you with its labyrinth of ancient streets and a charming mix of architectural styles. Some even call Girona a miniature Barcelona.
Another alternative is the city of La Coruña in northwestern Spain. It stands out with a couple of good city beaches, medieval alleys and a Museum of Fine Arts. According to experts, La Coruña “will soothe any worn-out soul”. Instead of Barcelona, experts also recommend going to San Sebastian with the best beach in the country and excellent cuisine, the city of Cadiz, founded more than 3,000 years ago, or Zaragoza, the hometown of the artist Francisco Goya.
Two cities outside of Spain also made the list. Tavira in Portugal will be remembered for its authentic Portuguese charm, many churches and crowded fishing boats in the water. Another excellent foreign alternative to Barcelona is located in Morocco. The city of Rabat, as experts promise, will captivate tourists with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, culinary component, weather and urban design, combining Islamic architecture with more modernist buildings.
Barcelona has seen a 25% increase in tourist arrivals over the past four years, with 34 million people visiting the popular Spanish city each year. In a 2016 city council survey, Barcelona residents said they considered tourism their biggest problem after unemployment.
