The Dominican resort of Punta Cana has been named the most popular tourist destination for those who just want to relax, BusinessInsider reports.
Mastercard has compiled a rating of Global Destination Cities Index: Play 2018. It includes 10 tourist places with the highest percentage travelers who arrived there last year solely for the purpose of recreation and entertainment. The ranking included completely different destinations. Among them: ecotourism centers, cities popular with history buffs and beach lovers, nightlife centers and even some lesser-known places.
The top spot goes to the Punta Cana resort in the Dominican Republic. 99.9% of the foreign visitors cited vacations or family trips as reasons for visiting this place. The city of Cusco in southeastern Peru came in second place. It is considered the capital of the ancient Inca Empire and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. 98% foreign visitors visited it for vacation. The picturesque island of Djerba in Tunisia was also in the top three. Last year, 97.7% visitors came here exclusively for vacation.
The top ten most popular holiday destinations according to Mastercard also included the 100-kilometer Caribbean coastline of the Riviera Maya in Mexico (97.5% guests), Palma da Mallorca in Spain (97.2%), Cancun in Mexico (96.8%), Bali in Indonesia (96.7%), Panama City (96.3%), Orlando in the USA (94.1%) and Phuket in Thailand (93%).
