Russia to assess flight and tourism safety in Middle East

Amid destabilization of relations between the US and Iran Prime Minister Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev has instructed to work on the issue of flight safety and tourism in the Middle East region.

"Dmitry Medvedev instructed Deputy Prime Minister Maxim Akimov, Minister Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Transport Minister Yevgeny Dietrich and the head of the Ministry of Economic Development Maxim Oreshkin to assess the safety of flights and tourism in the Middle East region, the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman region, taking into account the recent events that have occurred there,” said the press secretary of the head of the Russian government Oleg Osipov, TASS reports.

He also noted that Medvedev also instructed to prepare proposals to ensure the safety of Russian citizens, taking into account various scenarios for the development of the situation.

Let us recall that the situation in the region worsened on January 3, when a missile strike by the US army killed the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' Al-Quds special forces, Qasem Soleimani, and the deputy head of the Shiite militia Al-Hashd al-Shaabi, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.

Later on Wednesday, Iran launched retaliatory missile strikes on two military bases in Iraq used by the US military.

On the morning of January 8, a Boeing 737 of Ukraine International Airlines crashed two minutes after takeoff from Tehran. The crash claimed the lives of 167 people and 9 crew members. Against this backdrop, a number of major carriers, including Russian ones, suspended flights over Iran.
